 What is Yoga ?

Yoga is for everyone, regardless of age or physical condition. "Yoga" comes from a Sanskrit word which means "to yoke" or to join together. It is a technique to join the body, mind and spirit and too create a feeling of union. In yoga class we come together to take care of ourselves mentally, physically and spiritually so that life can unfold through us with more ease and understanding. This brings us to the peaceful place that people associate with yoga.

Yoga classes consist mostly of the practice of traditional physical exercises or "asanas." Breathing practices are also vital to better health and are an integral part of the practice. Like tea diffusing through hot water, yoga stretches blossom with flavor when infused with deep, rhythmic breathing. A class often includes some meditation and ends with a relaxation sequence. The atmosphere is safe and supportive, allowing you to work at your own level and explore your own limits.

When we think of yoga we think of these parts:
  • Asanas (exercises)
  • Pranayama (breathing)
  • Bhandas (energy locks)
  • Mantras (sacred sounds)
  • Mudras (hand gestures)
  • Meditation & Visualization

Yoga comes from a Hindu background. There are many different types of yoga, which we will discuss later. But each different type of yoga comes from a branch of the same tree, which initially was Hinduism.
